Lessons from Camden Town

Mon Aug 17, 2009, 10:59 AM
A while ago (read: March break) I went to England. While I was there, we went to Camden Town, and I learned a few things about clothing.

~A little bit of lace goes a long way. A lot goes even farther.
~It is probably not too much.
~Corset panels are pretty straight.
~Straight-across hemlines are made of fail.
~Purses can be anything you can imagine.
~Real corsets are heavy.
~If it looks DIY, something has gone wrong.
~More D-rings
~Use trim at the neckline.
~Brown is not the enemy.
~Show your shoulders.
~It's not too sheer.
~Screw cows, leather is awesome.
~Zippers don't have to be in the middle.
~Asymmetry is awesome.
~Lining material is never a real layer.
~Straps can go anywhere.
~Fishnet goes with everything.
~Forget everything you know about pants.
~Shoulder pads aren't dead yet.
~Segmented sleeves are amazing.
~Furry legwarmers. Yes.
~Bunching and ruffles look more intricate than they really are.
~Geometric shapes make good flowy sleeves.
~Lace can go on both sides of a seam.
~Use dramatic necklines.
~There is no limit to how much or how little fabric you can use.
~Always use binding tape or ribbon at the edges of crinoline.
~Brocade is awesome.
